Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better known to the public as Queen Latifah - is an American performer, actress and acrobat. Queen Latifah is an American actor, rapper and singer. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple divorced when Latifah was just 10 years old. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and kind in Arabic was given by her cousin when she was only eight. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the original members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was handed over to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the track. It was signed by Latifah, and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
